Boating & Fishing
Lake Wawasee is routinely patrolled by conservation officers. To fully enjoy your visit (and avoid a hefty fine), observe the following tips:
- Purchase the appropriate fishing license (resident or non-resident) and have it with you.
- A life vest is required for each person in the boat
- No boating is allowed in designated swimming areas. The lake permimeter is marked with buoys located about 200 feet from shore to designate a swimming area, which extends from the shoreline to the buoys.
- When operating a motor boat in the designated swimming area, you must idle directly to the shore or to the buoys; do not operate the boat parallel to the shore in a swimming areas (this does not apply to fishing boats using trolling motors).
- Sailboats have the right-of-way over power boats
- Boats with "heads" should use the free public boat waste disposal facility on the southeast end of Lake Wawasee
- Running lights are required between sunset and sunrise
- Maximum speed from sunset to sunrise is 10 mph
- Channel waterways are "no wake" zones
- To operate a personal watercraft (jet ski), you must have a driver's license
Sailing
The Wawasee Yacht Club is located at Pier 640 in the Turesdell Lodge/Brunjes Park area of the lake. Each summer weekend from Memorial Day to Labor Day the WYC sponsors races for Lasers and Sunfish on Saturday mornings (beginning at 10:00am) and E-Scows and Lightnings on Sunday mornings (beginning at 9:30am). If you observe the races from your boat, be mindfull to stay clear of the race course to avoid interfering with the participating sailboats. The club also sponsors junior sailing program in July.
